Marin’s annual crop and livestock report showed the county’s agricultural producers largely weathered the pandemic and drought, but the next few years could paint a different picture. The gross value of agricultural production last year went up by about 4 percent from the previous year, reaching almost $102 million. It was the first time the total value of Marin’s agricultural products surpassed $100 million since 2015, the year it reached a record high of over $111 million. The moon enters Earth’s shadow on the evening of Tuesday, May 25, for a total lunar eclipse. Unfortunately, most of this phenomenon will occur in the very early morning hours, beginning at 1:46 a.m. and reaching full eclipse at 4:09 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
More park trails have opened north of Bear Valley, providing opportunities to explore and continue to observe the Woodward Fire’s effects. Ash can act as a fertilizer and add nutrients to the soil. Some plants, like Bishop pines, require fire to open their cones and thus spread seeds; others, like coyote brush, can resprout from their roots if burned over. Also open is the main Bear Valley Visitor Center; the park remains open across the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

Marin County is exploring the purchase of the former San Geronimo Golf Course clubhouse to use as a headquarters for its fire department. The Board of Supervisors discussed acquiring the 22-acre parcel in a closed-session meeting last week.
Jason Weber, the Marin County Fire chief, said his department outgrew the Woodacre Fire Station over 30 years ago. Parts of the building predate 1940, and the living quarters were built in 1974. It’s situated a mile from Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in a residential neighborhood, which lengthens the time it takes for large engines and a bulldozer to respond.
