Harris, to Miss Edney, daughter of David Haynes, all of this County.â April 23, 1869: The Union Flag reported exciting news from Johnsonâs Depot. âA lady living at Johnsonâs Depot gave birth to a triplet of boys last week. This is certainly encouraging, in view of our threatening rupture with Spain and England. Maj. G.W. Blackburn, our efficient State Comptroller, will have to order the âsponsâ to the tune of seventy-five dollars upon the application of this enterprising lady, duly (indecipherable) and authenticated.â ....
Audit: Wisconsin economic agency’s performance improving Wisconsin’s troubled economic development agency improved its performance over the past fiscal year but it still must sharpen its oversight of tax credit contracts, policies on closing contracts and the accuracy of online data, according to an audit released Wednesday. The Legislative Audit Bureau’s biennial review found the quasi-public Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation largely complied with state law and its contracts when administering tax credits, loans and grants to businesses in fiscal year 2019-20. By December, the agency had awarded about $250 million to businesses to help them through the pandemic. The amount of past-due loans decreased from $7.6 million to $6.6 million in 2019 and 2020. The audit attributed the decline to WEDC’s writing off loans and amending contracts to defer repayments. ....
April 21, 1841: The Whig reported on two stray mules. âTaken up by Thomas J. Cox, of this county, five miles south of Jonesboro, two Mules (sic), one about 12 hands high, and the other near 14 hands â both dark browne (sic) â valued by George Reed and Calvin Howe, both to be worth fifty dollars.â âThe owner is requested to come forward prove this property â pay costs â or they will be disposed of as the law directs.â The Whig was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was also spelled as Jonesboro at the time. A Celebration of Life service has been announced for Hall of Fame Distinguished Broadcaster Ron Arnold. He died of complications from COVID-19 on Christmas Eve at age 87. A remembrance was delayed because of the pandemic. It is now planned for Saturday, April 24, at 10:00 a.m. at Parkside Lutheran Church in North Buffalo. Arnold enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1952 and was shot while serving in Korea, earning him a Purple Heart. ....
