From Housing To Food Insecurity: NIU Is Creating A One-Stop-Shop For Student Support Services

A new bill advancing in the Illinois House would require higher-ed institutions like NIU to organize assistance for homeless college students and students in care and also collect data on how many attend the school. Just as the pandemic began, NIU consolidated support services under the new Center for Student Assistance.
“I can tell my story once, I don t have to tell them 1,000 times. I can tell it once, and then that staff will be able to help me navigate the university and community resources,” said Olson.
The center can link students with legal support, the Huskie Food Pantry and a bevy of other programs. Olson says right now they serve around 50 students a week with the food pantry and helped around half a dozen homeless students get a hotel and then campus housing. Many students facing housing insecurity spend time sleeping on friends’ couches or in their cars and may not even realize they’re considered homeless and have ....

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. New York state will receive more than $58 million in funds to support homeless students under the American Rescue Plan, the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) announced last week.
The department announced plans to distribute $800 million to states to help support the needs of students experiencing homelessness under the American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief - Homeless Children and Youth fund. ....

How a new program in Victorville is helping community college students experiencing homelessness


Pallet Shelters and the L.A. Conservation Corps are building a village of 103 tiny homes in North Hollywood, near Laurel Canyon Boulevard and the 170 Freeway. The goal is to offer a lifeline to those experiencing homelessness.
To be eligible for assistance through the program, one must be enrolled at Victor Valley College, face housing insecurity or homelessness and maintain a 2.0 GPA.
This is kind of a hidden population, said Searchlight Society co-founder Cassandra Martinez. It might be taboo for the student to be like Hey, you know, I don t have a place to stay. But we are receiving referrals nearly daily. ....

Carrie Johnson, a beloved St. Augustine resident, gets her own street


In 2015, she was named as one of The Record s 10 Who Make a Difference. 
Among her many volunteer activities during her life, Miss Carrie, as she was referred to by all who knew her, organized an annual Christmas Caroling Galore, which started in 1995, according to the city.  Johnson established The Miss Carrie Foundation for Homeless Students, assisted with establishing the Lincolnville 150th anniversary celebration, and helped found the Anniversary to Commemorate the Civil Rights Demonstrations (ACCORD) organization, and served as vice president of the Fort Mose Historical Society.
Last year, commissioners voted to name the street in her honor. 
For those who want to learn more about Johnson, the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center at 102 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. has an exhibit featuring her life, according to the city. The museum is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. ....
