God s Hand Extended will partner with other non-profit organizations to host a support event for “It Takes A Village,” the Victor Valley College program that assists its homeless and needy student population.
Susan Conway, the founder of God’s Hand, said VVC students and faculty are invited to the support event that begins at 11 a.m. Saturday at Victorville First Assembly of God on Nisqualli Road.
“We will have free food boxes, clothing, resources, (a) taco man, Kona Ice and other activities,” Conway said. “We want to encourage the students to meet and greet each other and to get plugged into our community and the new program at VVC.” ....

How a new program in Victorville is helping community college students experiencing homelessness

Pallet Shelters and the L.A. Conservation Corps are building a village of 103 tiny homes in North Hollywood, near Laurel Canyon Boulevard and the 170 Freeway. The goal is to offer a lifeline to those experiencing homelessness.
To be eligible for assistance through the program, one must be enrolled at Victor Valley College, face housing insecurity or homelessness and maintain a 2.0 GPA.
This is kind of a hidden population, said Searchlight Society co-founder Cassandra Martinez. It might be taboo for the student to be like Hey, you know, I don t have a place to stay. But we are receiving referrals nearly daily. ....

A first-of-its-kind program aiming to house students facing challenges on where to live began earlier this month thanks to a partnership between Victor Valley College and the nonprofit Searchlight Society.
Since the “It Takes a Village” program started officially on Jan. 4, two students have already been temporarily put up in hotel rooms while they await more permanent housing.
“Our goal is to provide stable housing and wraparound services to the housing insecure students at Victor Valley College,” said Amber Allen, VVC’s director of special grant programs. “It is our pleasure to be on the front line in ensuring the academic and personal success of students experiencing challenges around housing.” ....
