The Missions Are Back at Wolff Stadium Published: June 24, 2021 Having been in charge of the San Antonio Missions minor league team since 1988, it’s no surprise that the natural rhythms of Burl Yarbrough’s life have revolved around the game. During a typical season, Yarbrough worked a regular day at Wolff Stadium plus the 70 or so nights the Missions hosted home games. When the pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 season, Yarbrough was still at the ballpark working all the time, there just weren’t any innings being played. “I was here but it was a very lonely place,” he says. “I spent a lot of time walking around the park thinking we should have crowds.” ....
We have to talk about the chaos that is San Antonio mascots. Sure, the Spurs Coyote in all his influencer glory seems like the obvious choice for most extreme. His eyeballs pop off and he probably has Gritty on speed dial for whenever he s really in the mood for a rager, but I m not entirely sure that cuts it these days. As a Rio Grande Valley native, I ve seen my fair share of mascots. The University of Texas at Brownsville proudly held onto the Scorpion as its mascot for years before merging with the rest of the universities in the area and becoming UTRGV. The Vaquero now reigns supreme around those parts, but not after a long battle that displaced the native sports mascot Ozzie the Ocelot. ....
