Major proposal to expand fisheries benefits in Qld

A MULTITUDE of much-needed restocking projects can be revitalised to improve fishing and the environment if a Queensland-wide freshwater permit is created.
As experienced restocking official Garry Fitzgerald highlighted, his proposal would significantly bolster revenue but not cost recreational anglers any more money than they are currently paying to enjoy freshwater fishing.
The Somerset and Wivenhoe Fish Stocking (SWFSA) president has spent months working on a plan to upgrade the current Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPP) to a Queensland Freshwater Fishing Permit (QFFP).
Under the current guidelines since 2000, everyone aged 18 or over is required to purchase a SIPP to fish in 63 freshwater locations in Queensland. That covers 40 dams and 23 weirs. ....

Grant needed to bolster cod recovery program in region

Nearly 6000 Mary River cod were released last December.
“Any endangered species or recovery programs are supposed to be driven by the federal government but the feds have never done anything about the Brisbane River cod,’’ he said.
“So we picked the ball up. We said we need to do something on the Upper Brisbane. We’ve got about 150km of river up there with no apex predator in there since their extinction in 1938-1940.
“We ran a program, accepted by the Queensland Government and Federal Government, and it was the first program like this driven by a community group.’’
The current target species is Mary River cod which have better survival prospects. ....

WHETHER you were camping with family or friends, sleeping in your ute or checking out the Big Red QT bus, the Kirkleagh Klassic was a fun weekend.
The fishing competition was one of Australia s most popular and successful freshwater events for more than a decade.
It was organised and conducted by active volunteers on the Somerset and Wivenhoe Fish Stocking Association, formerly called the Brisbane Valley Fish Management Committee.
Sadly, circumstances caught up with organisers who had done a fantastic job putting on secret weight and catch and release competitions for many years.
Having the secret weight format reduced the risk of cheating as anglers presented their fish not knowing what the specific measure was for each weigh-in. ....

10 years after cruel flood, fish stocks recovering: See why

WHEN millions of fish were lost from the Somerset and Wivenhoe lakes during the 2011 floods, a group of dedicated fish stockers were heartbroken.
Having regularly stocked both major catchments with a range of freshwater species since 1988, the volunteers could only watch as the valuable fish were washed over the Wivenhoe Dam wall.
But rather than let the cruel setback diminish their enthusiasm, they continued their impressive work.
Ten years later, long-serving Somerset and Wivenhoe Fish Stocking Association (SWFSA) president Garry Fitzgerald remains as committed as ever to replenishing the vital dams.
He leads an active committee still heavily focused on restocking, monitoring recreational fishing pressure and other community projects to revitalise two of Australia s leading freshwater habitats. ....
