Bangkok likely to face massive flooding as in 2011, climate expert says

A global-warming expert warned on Wednesday that Bangkok could face massive flooding similar to what happened in 2011 mainly because of possible 1,200-millimetre rainfall or the so-called “100-year-level rains”. ....

WHEN millions of fish were lost from the Somerset and Wivenhoe lakes during the 2011 floods, a group of dedicated fish stockers were heartbroken.
Having regularly stocked both major catchments with a range of freshwater species since 1988, the volunteers could only watch as the valuable fish were washed over the Wivenhoe Dam wall.
But rather than let the cruel setback diminish their enthusiasm, they continued their impressive work.
Ten years later, long-serving Somerset and Wivenhoe Fish Stocking Association (SWFSA) president Garry Fitzgerald remains as committed as ever to replenishing the vital dams.
He leads an active committee still heavily focused on restocking, monitoring recreational fishing pressure and other community projects to revitalise two of Australia s leading freshwater habitats. ....

'No feel-good story here': Flood tragedy destroyed family

Jordan Rice.
It was raining heavily that day, Monday, January 10, 2011, when Donna set off from their Vanity Street home in Toowoomba with Jordan and Blake in the car, to pick up Christopher and take him on errands.
On reaching the corner of James and Kitchener Streets, where water was across the road, Donna stopped short of the intersection. Photos show the Mercedes Benz was in shallow water. But after days of heavy rain, water was now gushing out of nearby East Creek and rising rapidly. The car stalled. It wouldn t restart.
Donna called triple-0 at 1.48pm. The police officer, who was new to the communications centre, chastised her for driving into flood waters. She refuted that, saying, It wasn t this bad then . ....

AS THE man in charge of a large rural area that usually celebrates every precious drop of rain, the catastrophic flood of 2011 was as bizarre a sight as anything Group Officer Dave Wandel can remember.
Mr Wandel was in charge of the Prenzlau Rural Fire Brigade when the floods hit in January of that year, and while he lived only a short distance away, there was so much water being dumped on the ground that road access to work was cut off.
In fact, of the 105 square-kilometre zone that the Prenzlau crews were responsible for, an astonishing 80 per cent was under water. ....
