Animated wonders in an 'artwalk' on the wild side delayed by Covid

AS we begin to take our first, tentative steps out of lockdown, all manner of works that fell victim to coronavirus restrictions are now being brought out of mothballs.
One of the most intriguing projects is Restless Worlds, a self-defined “kinetic sculpture artwalk” that was held over from the 2021 edition of the annual Manipulate Festival of puppetry, visual theatre and animated film.
The pandemic has had a nasty habit of dashing hopes, and so it was with the desire of Manipulate to bring Restless Worlds to the streets of Scottish cities back in January and February. Now, however, like a vaccinated quintagenarian venturing into a beer garden, this diverse set of animated installations has been dusted down and placed before the public. ....

A UNIQUE cultural project opens in Scotland this week offering the public a Covid-safe arts experience post lockdown.

Part of the Manipulate Festival, Restless Worlds had to be postponed because of the recent lockdown but will now be displayed in the windows of Edinburgh’s Lyceum before moving to Aberdeen to be presented as a multi-venue artwalk from May 6-16. It will then move to Glasgow. ....

The indie shops that kickstarted computing

Apple knows a thing or two about running successful stores. By letting people play around with the goods, congregate for a natter and ask experts for advice and support, its shops attract large crowds and even encourage some to whip out their credit cards to make a purchase.
When Apple opened its first branch in Tysons, Virginia almost 20 years ago, this approach felt invigorating. Where rivals would keep a beady eye on customers and discourage attempts to touch the products, Apple’s growing number of stores began to feel like welcoming social hubs.
In many ways, they invoked memories of the earlier days of computing. If you rewind to the late 1970s and early 1980s, computer shops were similarly more than just places to buy software and hardware. ....

Underneath a chest of drawers in my living room, there is a vintage sake set that I picked up at a market over 10 years ago. Today, it remains in its worn cardboard box with its faded, blossom pink Japenese label still attached. The set is dotted with delicate florals that look as if they have been plucked from a Willow Pattern scene and scattered casually across the ware. Inside the box, the mould is lined with blue silk, and each piece luxuriates in the folds and bulges of the fabric. Each choko, or cup, is thoughtfully furnished with a thumb indentation so the pattern warps slightly against the ripple of the ceramic. The matching tokkuri, the elegant, narrow-necked jug, has a spout so miniature in protrusion that the whole set takes on a charming smallness that makes it impossible to use, even to look at for very long, for the very ....
