Updated: 10:01 PM EDT May 8, 2021 Students in Massachusetts got the chance to see a number of sites in Boston where people of color and their supporters made history.Dr. Tony Laing, the director of the Wayland chapter of the Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO), organized the Inclusive Boston: Cultural Youth Bus Tour for Wayland middle and high school students on Saturday.The diverse group of 60 METCO students, resident students, parents and staff stopped by historic cultural sites in Boston such as Malcolm X s home and the Freedom House.Other stops along the tour included the original site of METCO headquarters, National Center for Afro-American Artists, Prince Hall Grand Lodge, Roxbury Community School, William Monroe Trotter House, Fowler Clark Epstein Farm, Jubilee Christian Church, Rise/Gateway to Boston, Bethel AME Church, Roxbury Community College and Roxbury Heritage State Park.The event was funded by the Boston Bridges Initiative, a rec ....

The renaming process began in September when the School Committee voted to pursue the name change. Fossett was born in Richmond in November 1780, the son of Mary Hemings and an unknown father, possibly William Fossett, a free carpenter who worked intermittently at Monticello late in the 1770s. Mary Hemings, the oldest child of Elizabeth “Betty” Hemings, was at the time an enslaved domestic servant in the household of Governor Thomas Jefferson. Three months later she and her children were carried off by British troops during Benedict Arnold’s raid on the capital. After Cornwallis’s surrender at Yorktown in October 1781, Fossett and his family were brought back to Monticello, Jefferson’s residence in Albemarle County. During Jefferson’s absence in France (1784–1789), Fossett lived in Charlottesville with his mother and siblings. She had been hired to a white merchant, Thomas Bell, by whom she had two children. Unable to marry legally, Bell and Mary Hemings, described by her grandson Robert Scott as a “bright mulatto,” lived as husband and wife, an arrangemen ....
