Julian Lage is joined by bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King on Squint.
Guitarist Julian Lage’s sparkling second trio recording with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King titled “Squint” and out Friday builds on their extraordinary rapport and shared musical references, aided by the input of both friends and famous orators.
Covers had dominated their first album together, 2019′s “Love Hurts,” adventurous explorations of songs ranging from pieces by shared influences from jazz (Ornette Colemen, Jimmy Giuffre, two by Keith Jarrett) to a pair of Roy Orbison hits (“Crying” and the title track). ....

Sonny Rollins – WICN May Artist of the Month – 90.5 WICN Public Radio

Written by Doug Hall on May 20, 2021
If you happened to be on the Williamsburg Bridge anytime from the summer of 1959 through roughly the autumn of 1961, you would have been privileged to hear the sound of a true artist seeking to find new directions and an inner voice on his instrument. Already famous and successful, with constant performing and recording, Sonny Rollins, one of the greatest tenor saxophonists of the Bebop and hard bop eras, had left the public eye, working out his notes alone on the bridge, to find a new conversation with his horn. He would later record
The Bridge, his 1962 comeback album, a direct inspiration, and result of this sabbatical. Rollins’ shift to a more narrative voice and stream of consciousness style on his saxophone would be highly influential, impacting all other jazz horn players to follow. ....

Julian Lage shares new song from Blue Note debut; new album out June 11

Guitar virtuoso Julian Lage shares "Boo's Blues," the second song from his soon-to-be-released Blue Note Records debut album, Squint, out June 11. The loping swing feel of "Boo’s Blues" exemplifies Lage’s ability to write with his bandmates in mind while echoing his influences.
“I like to imagine this music being played by the titans of bass and drums,” Lage says. “I'm imagining Billy Higgins, I'm imagining Art Taylor, I'm imagining Wilbur Ware, even though I’m writing explicitly for Dave and Jorge.” ....

WICN's April Artist of the Month – Thelonious Monk – 90.5 WICN Public Radio

Written by Emily Morrow on April 1, 2021
If legendary jazz
musicians were collected together in one giant jigsaw puzzle and each musician
was one piece – Thelonious Monk’s individual piece would be impossible to cut
out. As a singular artist, his shape or place in jazz is too uniquely
non-conforming.
From a musical and historical standpoint, he is recognized as one of the first
creators of modern jazz and a major influence on the later development of the
Bebop movement. He influenced all its key players, along with helping mentor
both John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins in his 1940s quartet.
An innate ....
