Over 35% of people in C'River living in abject poverty ― Commissioner

The Commissioner for International Development Corporation in Cross River, Dr. Inyang Asibong has revealed that about 36.3 percent of people residing in the state are merely surviving because they live in abject poverty.
She said the affected individuals cut across the 196 wards of the state and have different situations ( circumstances) which make them fall under the category of poor people.
Asibong made the revelation Friday in Calabar while flagging off the campaign for initiation of Rapid Response Registrar, RRR in the state.
She said: “Latest poverty index in Nigeria is 40.1%, Cross River is 36.3% which is still very high but we promise to do everything within the reach of the ministry to step down the poverty index in the state. ....

COVID-19: Key Into RRR scheme, Kogi govt urges residents

The Kogi State government has urged its citizens to key into the Rapid Response Register, (RRR) which will serve as a database to deliver social assistance and emergency response during future emergencies and disasters.
The Kogi State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning Asiwaju Asiru Idris gave the advice on Wednesday at a press conference to sensitize residents on the programme.
Idris while advising Kogi people to respond to messages on their phones and get registered, noted that the Rapid Response Register” (RRR) is a shock response framework designed by the National Social Safety-Net Program (NASSP) in collaboration with the World Bank to provide emergency social interventions to poor and vulnerable households in challenging circumstances (Natural disaster, epidemic, pandemic, economic and downturn). ....

According to the 2018/19 Nigeria Living Standards Survey (NLSS), just 1.6% of Nigerians lived in a household that was enrolled in the National Social Safety Net Project (NASSP), the country’s flagship social protection program. As is the case in other countries, those Nigerians newly impoverished by the COVID-19 crisis are likely to be different from the existing poor: they are more urban, more likely to live in southern Nigeria, and more dependent on service sector incomes. This evolving profile of the poor is reflected in current efforts to expand social protection in Nigeria, including the Rapid Response Register for the COVID-19 Cash Transfer Project, which is being guided by the mapping exercise described below. ....
