A fortnight ago, I activated my “mirror”, a potent if imaginary artefact intended to reflect the best chess players ever. It has more work to do today, and first I must thank readers for a very lively and interesting discussion in the comments afterwards.
As I mentioned in those comments, I didn’t have a very strong opinion myself as to who was/is the best of the best, which is partly why I asked. People seem to divide into roughly four different camps: Fischer adherents; those who advance the claims of other recent top players; a few shouts for Lasker, Capablanca and Alekhine; and some mentions of the great players of the past who can’t be directly compared to the modern crop but were way ahead of their time Morphy, Philidor and even El Greco.

(CNN)A sixth body has been recovered several miles south of Port Fourchon, Louisiana, where a commercial vessel capsized on April 13, according to the Lafourche Parish Coroner.
There were 19 people on board the 129-foot commercial liftboat, known as Seacor Power, at the time of the capsize, according to the US Coast Guard. Six people were rescued, six bodies have been recovered and seven people remain missing.
Officials say the details of the ship s mission and where it was going are still under investigation. Liftboats are used to service oil platforms and other offshore assets like wind farms.
Trump Donates to United Cajun Navy for Search and Rescue Mission
The group on Friday on social media confirmed Trump’s donation, thanking him.
“We will bring every crewmember of the #seacorpower vessel home!” the nonprofit wrote in a tweet.
Todd Terrell, the president of the United Cajun Navy, confirmed to local news outlets that Trump donated $10,000. He said the money would be used to bolster search efforts for crew members from Seacor Power, a 129-foot lift boat that capsized on April 13 off the coast of Louisiana.
Trump’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
A U.S. Coast Guard-led mission, including Good Samaritans, resulted in the finding of 11 people from the capsized vessel; five were dead.

The vessel capsized off the southern coast of Louisiana on April 13 after winds reached speeds of 70 to 80 miles an hour. Six people were rescued, and authorities have confirmed that six people were killed in the incident. The Coast Guard suspended the search for the vessel on April 19, after a 175-hour search of over 9,200 nautical miles.
After the search was suspended, Capt. Will Watson, the commander of Coast Guard Sector New Orleans, thanked everyone who had assisted with the rescue effort and extended his condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and those who are still missing.
