ERIC: This is the coolest thing I ve ever heard. Explain to me how this marriage between these two music styles happens on stage.
PATTI: We played a program called a Bluegrass Mass. It s a piece written for a choir and bluegrass bands. We have a full chorale singing in English and Latin and you have a five-piece bluegrass band and we meet in the middle. ....

The Winston-Salem Symphony Chorus is teaming up with bluegrass stars Hank, Pattie & the Current for a concert to be streamed on demand starting at 7:30 p.m. April 24.
Hank, Pattie & the Current will join the Winston-Salem Symphony Chorus to lend energetic bluegrass rhythms to the sacred liturgy in composer Carol Barnettâs âThe World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass.â

Piedmont Wind Symphony chooses veteran conductor and wind music scholar as its new music director and conductor

The board of directors of the Piedmont Wind Symphony in Winston-Salem recently hired Mark A. Norman as the organizationâs music director and conductor.
He replaces Matthew Troy, who left the position in early 2020 to lead the Western Piedmont Symphony in Hickory.
Norman has more than 30 years of experience as a conductor and tuba performer. He has been working closely with the Piedmont Wind Symphony on a recording project since late 2020, but his first day on the job as music director/conductor was Feb. 26.
He is also director of Instrumental Ensembles and a conducting faculty artist at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. ....

Like all arts organizations in the Triad, the Winston-Salem Symphony was hit hard by the pandemic lockdowns and social distance measures. But far from shutting down, the orchestra made up of roughly 80 musicians has adapted in creative ways under its new Music Director Timothy Redmond. He recently spoke with WFDD’s David Ford.
