Winchester man found not guilty, insane in 2018 murder

Jeffrey Yao, the man who admitted he fatally stabbed a medical student 20 times with a hunting knife in 2018, was found not guilty Wednesday by lack of criminal responsibility because of his mental illness.
According to a press release from Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan s office, Yao, 27, of Winchester, was found not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility of the murder of Deanne Stryker and of the attack on the man who tried to stop his rampage at the Winchester Library. .
Judge Kathe Tuttman ordered Yao to be civilly committed to Bridgewater State Hospital. The ruling came during a bench trial after the defendant waived his right to a jury trial. ....

WINCHESTER City Council is working with Winchester Public Library representatives to finalize a grant that will help cover the city’s cost for an expansion project.
City Attorney John Paul Coonrod said the library was built in 1910 and has not been expanded. It has outgrown the available space.
“It gets very cramped in there, so they could benefit from more room,” he said. “We are looking at adding more space for the patrons especially for children who during non-COVID times are coming for story hour or different programs. It can get very crowded, I’ve heard.” ....
