CHARLOTTE, N.C. Mecklenburg County is addressing the lifeguard shortage this summer by offering new incentives including a $15 minimum wage and signing bonuses to new employees.
Officials say the shortage of lifeguards exists on a national level that has been building for years, and it has limited Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation’s ability to open its two outdoor pools, Double Oaks and Cordelia.
In order to open all outdoor community pools and beaches in the county, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is attempting to revamp recruitment efforts.
Staff is looking to fill more than 250 part-time and seasonal lifeguard positions by offering free training and a variety of free programs targeted to those looking to become lifeguards.

It s hard to believe Easter Sunday 2020 basically did not happen. Churches were shut down, most families did not gather for a big feast, Easter egg hunts were canceled, and most importantly, the COVID-19 pandemic was consuming the entire world.

That in and of itself is all the more reason why most companies are giving their employees a well-deserved day off this Easter. Store associates from these companies will have an opportunity to enjoy some quality family time with their loved ones.
Below is the current information for how the holiday will affect Killeen, Harker Heights and Copperas Cove.
Killeen
City of Killeen offices will be closed Monday. All offices will reopen for normal business hours Tuesday.
Emergency services will operate without interruption, and garbage collection will remain on its regular schedule.
The Family Recreation Center will be open from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.
City closures also include the Killeen Transfer Station and the Killeen Recycling Center, libraries and the Killeen Animal Shelter.
Recycling trailers will remain open.
Harker Heights
Harker Heights city offices will be closed Monday. All offices will reopen for normal business hours Tuesday.
