Virgin Islands CIO Rupert Ross has told legislators the time is now for the U.S. territory to invest more in cybersecurity staff and resources. Multiple territory departments have been hacked in recent years.

(TNS) The Virgin Islands government needs to invest more resources in cybersecurity to brunt an ongoing threat to computer systems vulnerable to ongoing attacks, according to testimony this week in the Senate s Committee on Housing, Transportation, and Telecommunications.
Bureau of Information Technology Director and Chief Information Officer Rupert Ross said the department has 19 employees territorywide, and they need to add more capacity as it relates to cybersecurity, as it relates to network operations as well. ....

Bryan administration seeks to correct post-hurricane payment flubs to prevent debt payments

In order for the territory to remove itself from a federal mandate that requires it to seek an approval every time it draws down recovery funds, the V.I. government must first rectify a bevy of payment errors made by local agencies shortly after hurricanes Irma and Maria.
If left unfixed, the errors could cost the territory millions.
The errors were discovered by a federal audit that examined the territoryâs recovery project payments in fiscal year 2018. When released in October 2019, the findings showed a sweeping lack of supporting documentation for various transactions.
Collectively, this accumulated to roughly $519 million in âpotential debtâ owed to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. ....
