A year later, more questions than answers over Seattle council's stance on defunding SPD

Following the death of George Floyd, a series of protests, and several well-documented clashes between police and demonstrators in Seattle, seven of nine Seattle City Councilmembers had stated their support for defunding SPD by as much as 50%.
A handful backed off that stance in the months to follow, although it’s been unclear to what extent, or even which councilmembers still stand behind that position. After reaching out to all nine councilmembers for some clarity, we were still left with more questions than answers. ....

OLYMPIA – The Washington State Senate voted to confirm Umair A. Shah, MD, MPH as Secretary of Health on Friday, April 23. The vote follows Secretary Shah’s testimony before the Senate Committee on Health & Long Term Care in a confirmation hearing on March 10, and the committee’s subsequent recommendation of his confirmation to the full Senate.
Gov. Inslee appointed Secretary Shah to lead the Department of Health (DOH) in December 2020. Since then, Secretary Shah has been responsible for the state’s COVID-19 response and vaccination efforts. Under his leadership, over 40% of the state’s population has received at least one dose of vaccine and two million people have been fully vaccinated. As of this week, providers in the state have given five million doses of vaccine, and more than 250,000 dose ....

Ignoring voters, Legislature passes carbon reduction measures with cap and trade bill and low carbon fuels standard

SB 5096 cannot be implemented until other bills are enacted raising multiple taxes
On Saturday, the Washington State Senate passed SB 5096 by a vote of 27-22, and it now heads to Gov. Jay Inslee’s desk for signing. On Sunday afternoon, the Senate passed HB 1091 creating a low carbon fuel standard. Both bills are tied to a future transportation package which must include a gas tax increase of a nickel or more.
“We finally have meaningful climate legislation that reflects the values and priorities of Washingtonians, and that respects the science of climate change,” Gov. Inslee said in a statement.
Inslee’s statement appears to fly in the face of voters’ actions. Both bills bypass the will of voters who soundly rejected I-732 and I-1631, which would have imposed a carbon tax raising the cost of home heating, vehicle fuels, and more in 2016 and 2018. ....
