OLYMPIA – The Washington State Senate passed Thursday two controversial climate proposals that look to reduce carbon emissions in the state: a “cap-and-trade” bill and a clean fuel standard.
Both bills have been proposed by Democrats and Gov. Jay Inslee for years, but neither has made its way through the Legislature. They’re both pieces of what Senate Democrats call a “grand bargain,” which ties proposals that reduce carbon emissions to a transportation revenue package that funds new highways, roads and green energy initiatives. ....

SEATTLE, April 8, 2021 /PRNewswire/ The Climate Commitment Act (CCA), SB5126, is one step closer to becoming the first climate legislation in the country to pave the way to net zero carbon emissions by the year 2050. The Washington State Senate passed the historic and carefully crafted cap-and-invest legislation today, which now heads to the Washington State House of Representatives to continue through the process of becoming law.
Senator Reuven Carlyle introduced the bill that both puts a decreasing cap on carbon and on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while making significant investments in new infrastructure, transit, agriculture, forestry and shipbuilding projects. State Senate passes bill to ban use of Native American mascots in schools

The Washington State Senate passed a bill Tuesday night banning the use of Native American mascots in public schools.
The bill prohibits schools from using any Native names, symbols, or images as team names, logos, or mascots. It also carves out potential exceptions provided “certain requirements are met, including tribal consultation and authorization.”
Schools that have been already using Native imagery will also be allowed to gradually phase out uniforms and other materials.
Supporters of the bill have fought back against arguments that mascots honor the history and legacy of Washington’s Native population. ....
