Steven Kent Schneider, 1950 - 2021

Steven Kent Schneider, 1950 - 2021
Steven Kent Schneider
Steven Kent Schneider passed away on February 25, 2021, at age 70 after a courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer. He was a follower of Christ, dedicated husband, loving father, caring grandfather, uncle and brother, fun-loving friend and avid sports fan, especially of the Kansas Jayhawks.
He was born to Verna and Alex Schneider on September 29, 1950, in Great Bend, Kansas. In his hometown of Otis, Kansas, he was well known for stirring up (mostly) harmless shenanigans with his closest pals throughout his adolescence. In high school, he displayed athletic talent on every kind of ball field and court, was voted Homecoming King by his peers and graduated as the 1968 Otis High School salutatorian. ....

How the Faithful Are Fighting COVID in Post-Hurricane Honduras

Share
MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA In the wake of two devastating November hurricanes estimated to have killed over 90 people in Honduras, church-run
albergues (shelters) across the Central American country have played a key role in housing thousands of people displaced from their homes. While these shelters provide essential care, health experts from faith-based and secular NGOS alike have warned that cramped living conditions, a lack of protective equipment, and the complete disruption of victims’ lives could lead to another wave of COVID-19 in the country, even in those areas far from the epicenter of the hurricane damage.
So far, the country of about 9.5 million people has seen about 17,000 confirmed cases and just over 3,000 deaths this year, about 300 deaths per million people and about a third of the per capita deaths seen in the U.S., according to tracking data from Johns Hopkins University. Then came Hurricane Eta, touching down as a Categor ....

Plot Your Own Advent Conspiracy

December 16, 2020
Four miles from my house, atop the highest hill in the area, sits a Benedictine monastery. A dozen cement-and-brick buildings encircle the hilltop, including the church, abbey, retreat house, library and seminary. I don’t think I can see my house from the monastery, but on clear days, which are rare enough in western Oregon this time of year, I can get a 360-degree view of the valley, encompassing hundreds of square miles of farms, fields, nurseries and small forests of Christmas trees. I am an oblate novice at the monastery.
I don’t do a good job of remembering to pray for my Benedictine neighbors, but I know they are praying for me. Six times a day, the monks offer praise and thanksgiving to God through the Liturgy of the Hours. They pray for the region, and I like to think of the monastery as a lighthouse that has been pulsing in this dark corner of the world for nearly 130 years. ....
