Wilkes Central students accused of assaulting another student with broom handle; father questions how school officials treated incident


A Wilkesboro father is raising questions about how Wilkes County Schools officials handled an incident involving his son, who authorities say was assaulted with a broom handle in a locker room at Wilkes Central High School in April.
Five male Wilkes Central students, ranging in age from 15 to 18, have been charged in the incident involving Jovan Miller’s 15-year-old son. During the incident, a student “shoved a broom handle against the victim’s buttocks,” and another student held him down, according to court documents.

The 18-year-olds were charged with misdemeanor simple assault. Juvenile records are sealed in North Carolina, so it’s unclear what the younger students were charged with. ....

Narrow divide on county board as Forsyth County weighs sale of land for church developments


Forsyth County Commissioner Tonya McDaniel looks to hold the key vote as the county board considers which church-sponsored development project gets to buy a lot at the corner of Highland Avenue and Fifth Street, or in fact whether the county sells the lot at all.
And McDaniel isn’t saying how she feels.
The six other county commissioners voiced their opinions on the issue Thursday, but McDaniel kept her mouth closed and said she’s thinking about all the options.
That leaves three commissioners in favor of at least putting the land up for bid, and three who say the county should not dispose of the property at all. ....

UNC School of the Arts offers a new scholarship program aimed for diversity


UNC School of the Arts has set up a new scholarship program in hopes of recruiting a more diverse group of students.
The Winston-Salem arts conservatory announced Wednesday that it will work with a New York foundation “to recruit, train and support talented students who might be missed through traditional avenues,” according to a news release.
UNC School of the Arts said it plans to award 10 full scholarships to undergraduates from eight U.S. cities, including Charlotte, Dallas and Philadelphia. The first Posse Artists will enter UNCSA in fall 2022. School officials said they hope they’ll get at least one scholar for each of its five arts divisions. ....

As development comes to East Winston, two church-related projects jockey for one site


A 1.3-acre vacant lot stands at the epicenter of plans to develop property in East Winston near the Innovation Quarter, with two church-related groups vying to acquire the site from Forsyth County government.
The bidding comes at a time when East Winston is on the verge of seeing a game-changing 200-unit apartment complex built to provide affordable housing in a $40 million investment.
The county has not even decided to sell the property, but the groups have differing ideas on what should go there: The development team associated with United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, which is building the apartments, sees the site as a park envisioned by the East End Master Plan for transforming the neighborhood. ....
