We have the tools
Can you imagine sending a child outside to play in the middle of winter without a coat, hat or gloves? They would be unprotected from the cold and risk their health. Thatâs what it will be like if we send our unvaccinated kids to school without masks.
Masks work in preventing the spread of COVID-19. The Duke Collaborative Study, which included our school district, showed how effective N.C. schools were at preventing the transmission of COVID-19 last year. The studyâs authors stated, âWith masking, the schools clearly can safely deliver face-to-face education for children and adults.â They went on to say that remote education is not necessary; we have the tools to safely and successfully have in-person instruction.
A Wilkesboro father is raising questions about how Wilkes County Schools officials handled an incident involving his son, who authorities say was assaulted with a broom handle in a locker room at Wilkes Central High School in April.
Five male Wilkes Central students, ranging in age from 15 to 18, have been charged in the incident involving Jovan Millerâs 15-year-old son. During the incident, a student âshoved a broom handle against the victimâs buttocks,â and another student held him down, according to court documents.

The 18-year-olds were charged with misdemeanor simple assault. Juvenile records are sealed in North Carolina, so itâs unclear what the younger students were charged with.

Beginning Tuesday, adult Forsyth County residents become eligible for a $25 gift card for getting their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.
The Forsyth Health Department said Friday it has 1,000 of the gift cards, which can be used anywhere a debit MasterCard is accepted.
People taking someone for their first shot are also offered the gift card, even if they already had their first dose. Drivers are eligible for a card for each person they take for a first dose.
The state Department of Health and Human Services said the $25 card for the driver “helps offset the costs for those who help family, friends and neighbors find their spot for a vaccine and drive them to their shots.”
