The Biden Administration has been quick to respond to the
unfolding situation in Myanmar (also known Burma): a day after the
military, known as the Tatmadaw, seized control of the
country s government, the State Department declared the actions a coup d état,
resulting in a cutoff of many categories of foreign assistance.

U.S. officials have continued to use a range of policy tools to apply pressure on the military leadership of Myanmar (also known as Burma) in response to the military coup in the country and escalating violence against peaceful protestors. These moves have continued to follow a step-by-step approach, with important export control and sanctions additions thus far in March 2021.
New Export Controls
On March 4, 2021, the U.S. Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) announced new export controls and Entity List additions for Myanmar.
First, BIS added Myanmar to the “military end user” and “military end use” restrictions under 15 CFR 744.21, which were previously in place for China, Russia, and Venezuela. This imposes a license requirement for exports, reexports, or transfers of items listed in Supplement No. 2 to Part 744 of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) where there ....

The US Department of the Treasury sanctioned the two adult children of commander-in-chief of the Myanmar military, Min Aung Hlaing, on Wednesday in response to the continued violence by military forces against protesters.
In a press release, the Treasury Department labeled Min Aung Hlang as the leader of the military coup against Myanmar’s democratically elected government, saying:
The United States stands in solidarity with the people of Burma, and we remain committed to promoting accountability for those responsible for the coup and ongoing violence. The United States urges the immediate release of State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint, as well as all others unjustly detained since February 1, including members of civil society, journalists, and human rights activists. ....

March 10 (UPI) The Biden administration blacklisted the adult children of the Myanmar junta s leader on Wednesday as human rights groups warn of escalating violence in the Southeast Asian nation.
Treasury announced Aung Pyae Sone, 36, and Khin Thiri Thet Mon, 39, the adult children of armed forces Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing, as well as six of their companies have been sanctioned, freezing all of their U.S. property and assets while barring Americans from doing business with them. ....

United States Targets Family Members Profiting from Connection to Burmese Coup Leader

 – Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned the two adult children of the commander-in-chief of the Burmese military forces, Min Aung Hlaing, who is the leading actor in the overthrow of Burma’s democratically elected government, as well as six companies of his two adult children.  Treasury took these actions in response to the Burmese military’s coup against the democratically elected civilian government of Burma and its brutal killing of peaceful protesters.  The United States stands in solidarity with the people of Burma, and we remain committed to promoting accountability for those responsible for the coup and ongoing violence.  The United States urges the immediate release of State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint, as well as all others unjustly detained since February 1, including members of civil society, journalists, and human rights activists. ....
