Walnut Way executive director Antonio Butts discussed the growth of Blue Skies Landscaping over the past 12 years.
Walnut Way Conservation Corp. is converting a collection of four properties along West Fond du Lac Avenue in Milwaukee into the new headquarters for the organization’s workforce development arm, Blue Skies Landscaping.
Leaders of the neighborhood nonprofit organization celebrated the social enterprise’s new home, located at 1414 W. Fond du Lac Ave. in the city’s Lindsay Heights neighborhood, with a flag-raising ceremony Tuesday.
Blue Skies Landscaping, which was founded in 2012, provides landscaping, environmental and green infrastructure services in greater Milwaukee. Over the years, the organization has developed multiple pocket parks on city-owned properties, installed green infrastructure throughout the area and removed pavement and impermeable surf ....

Zilber Family Foundation announces recipients of $1.8 million in grant funding

Zilber Family Foundation announced it has awarded $1.8 million in grants to 16 nonprofit organizations, including 11 in the Milwaukee area.
Ten of the grants target Milwaukee’s Lindsay Heights, Clarke Square and Layton Boulevard West neighborhoods, where the foundation has directed much of its investment for more than a decade through the Zilber Neighborhood Initiative.
The funding is aimed at supporting community-based organizations’ projects and programs that increase access to quality and affordable housing, provide financial education, develop minority-owned small businesses and build capacity and effectiveness of the residents and nonprofits leading the work. ....

Walnut Way Conservation Corp. leaders and supporters this week marked the completion of the second phase of the $3.3 million Innovations and Wellness Commons development in Milwaukee’s Lindsay Heights neighborhood.
The Commons project is a 17,200-square-foot commercial mixed-use development at North 16th Street and West North Avenue that houses various health and wellness services and retail tenants.
The project’s first phase, which was completed in 2015, included the 6,500-square-foot renovation of an existing historic building at 1615-1617 W. North Ave. and a 4,500-square-foot new addition. The building houses MCFI (Milwaukee Center for Independence), Fondy Food Center, and Walnut Way’s new social enterprise, Designaway apparel printing and maker’s space. ....
