The halls of the Iowa Capitol are crawling with Bobcats. Marshalltown High School sent two students to the Capitol as legislative pages for the 89th General Assembly. Senior Mary Kate Gruening is working in the Legislative Services Agency and recent graduate Abbey Welden serves as an assistant in the House of Representatives. There are 28 pages this session 14 in the House, 10 in the Senate and four in the LSA. Both students applied and were selected for page positions in the fall. They each highlighted a field trip to the Capitol they took in eighth grade as an experience which pushed them to pursue this opportunity. ....
Trevor Babcock State lawmakers representing districts in Marshall County started work at the Iowa Capitol wrapped up the first week of the 2021 legislative session, but their work has only just begun. State Rep. Dean Fisher (R-Montour) has served the 72nd district for the past seven years, while newly elected State Rep. Sue Cahill (D-Marshalltown) is serving the 71st district for the first time. Fisher hopes to expand parental choice in the education system, develop a conservative budget, protect Second Amendment rights and push a pro-life amendment to rule against the Iowa Supreme Court’s to guarantee a right to an abortion in the Iowa constituion. ....
T-R FILE PHOTO The Entrance of Marshalltown City Hall. More than 50 signatures were validated on a petition to hold a special election for the first ward council seat. The Marshalltown City Council appointed Raymond Starks as Sue Cahill’s successor as the first ward council member on Dec. 31. Cahill vacated her position with the council at the end of the year as she was elected to represent State House District 71. City Administrator Jessica Kinser said the city received the petition on Jan. 6. Only 30 signatures were needed to trigger a special election and 54 were received. The Marshall County Commission of Elections announced Monday the special election will be held Feb. 16. Only first ward residents are eligible to vote in the election. Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The last day for voting absentee in person is Feb. 12. ....

The boxes were handed out before the weather turned too bad. Cornerstone Church is making its presence known in Marshalltown months before the official kickoff. The church was once again the sponsor of the Farmers to Families food drive on Tuesday. The previous drive was held Dec. 17. On Tuesday’s event, 931 30-pound boxes were handed out, with the last given as the snow began falling heavily. Steve Bensema, the campus pastor for Cornerstone Church, suited up for the weather and directed traffic on Church Street as vehicles drove into the parking lot where volunteers were waiting to load boxes into back seats. ....
Joint statement from PKKP and Rio Tinto Rio Tinto and the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura people (PKKP) confirm they have taken initial steps in rebuilding their relationship following the events at Juukan Gorge in May 2020. PKKP in co-operation with Rio Tinto have been involved in remedial works at Juukan Gorge. These works will continue. A joint session of the PKKP and Rio Tinto boards has been held to reaffirm Rio Tinto s apology and commitment to rebuilding our relationship. In addition, we will prepare a Heads of Agreement that will capture our commitments and outline how both Rio Tinto and PKKP will work together. While there has been some important progress made in the relationship so far, we are not underestimating the time it will take to genuinely work together and achieve the mutual objectives of this partnership. ....
