Hey Area is where we find answers to questions you ask. Steve Shea wanted to to know, Why is the Richmond bridge built on a four-mile gap in the bay when it could have been built over a one-mile gap just a little bit farther north?
It’s 7:45 a.m. and I’m in the car with Albany resident Steve Shea. We’re headed from the East Bay to his office in Novato.
“Yeah I’ve been commuting to this job ten years now,” he says, his hands on the wheel, eyes fixed on traffic ahead.
As we approach the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge this sunny morning, the bay looks shockingly blue on either side. Commuters are weaving in and out of the lanes, filing in to get onto the span. Steve points to the shoreline peeking over the railing to our right. He‘s pointing to McNears Beach that’s the point where Steve actually thinks this bridge should have been built. ....

California is known around the world as a leader in the fight against climate change. The state has an ambitious goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 40% below 1990 levels. Unfortunately, we’re on a trajectory to fall far short of this goal by the 2030 deadline unless we make bold and immediate changes.
A recent report by California State Auditor Elaine Howle specifically points to transportation-related emissions as the problem. Howle’s audit found California saw an uptick in transportation emissions since 2013. To step up our climate game, we need to make it easier for people to get around without cars. ....

Larry Collins has met quite a few celebrities over the years at his job. Niners Hall of Famer Joe Montana stopped by with a trailer full of horses once. NBA legend Bill Russell was the nicest, stopping to chat with him for a few minutes. Another NFL Hall of Famer, Ronnie Lott, even gave him an autograph.

People have been saying it for a couple months now: Traffic around the Bay Area is pretty much back to pre-pandemic levels. But what transportation planners warned of last year appears to be coming to pass it s going to be worse than before until BART use ramps back up.
The numbers are coming in, and after hearing that bridge traffic around the Bay was back to 85% of pre-pandemic levels in the second week of March, we no have some bridge-specific data that shows the Bay Bridge is back to 92% of its pre-pandemic levels. As the Chronicle reports, via data from the Bay Area Toll Authority and the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway & Transportation District, during the week of March 21, traffic on five local bridges was over 90% of normal levels. But things are rebounding more slowly in the South Bay where a) there s less BART service normally so there is less of an impact from reduced train servic ....
