Cascade Lake to operate on reduced hours due to mining

(ABC 6 NEWS) - As the weather gets warmer more swimming options are opening in Rochester. Cascade Lake was the only place to cool off in town last summer. This year it s back open, but there are some changes.
The lake was open all summer long last year, but this year it is only open Friday afternoons through Sundays due to mining on the lake.
It s actually a dredging operation they suck the sand and the sediment off the bottom of the lake that is put in that big pile over there and the water drains out and it is good, clean sand that they can use for construction whether it is fill material or concrete, said Rochester Parks and Forestry Division, Michael Nigbur. ....

Controversial goose control project report shows more untouched nests, fewer volunteers than planned

Among the listed volunteers was Greg Munson, who later denounced the practice of oiling eggs to limit development. The neighbor of Silver Lake Park said he feels the practice is inhumane and suggested the volunteers replace eggs with ceramic substitutes instead of treating them.
Widman said other members of Silver Lake Friends opted not to participate after concerns were raised, but volunteers who helped the effort voiced a desire to return.
Replacement and oiling are options supported by the Humane Society of the United States and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
During the first day of volunteer addling, Munson and approximately 25 protesters voiced a variety of objections at Silver Lake Park, with some opposed to the oiling option and others objecting to any management effort that would reduce the number of goslings in city parks. ....

Rochester’s Parks and Recreation Department is responding to community concerns as plans to addle goose eggs in four parks continue.
“We recognize the concerns and questions raised by community members,” Parks and Recreation Director Paul Widman said in a statement released Tuesday morning. “We have been and are committed to following the recommendations of the Humane Society of the United States. The Park Board and department value wildlife and we will continue to ensure we are taking a thoughtful and humane approach to wildlife management ....

Will volunteers help control goose population?

The addling process typically involves oiling or otherwise manipulating eggs to prevent them from developing and hatching. The activity is listed as a humane control measure by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
Since it involves direct contact with goose nests and eggs, the plan requires state and federal permits, which the city will seek before work starts in March.
Addling is done from March through May, when geese typically lay eggs.
Parks and Recreation Director Paul Widman said the short season limits the scope of the effort to the two city parks.
“I wanted to make sure it wasn’t putting too much pressure on a volunteer group,” he said. ....
