“There are many ways to do that,” said board member Kaia Yngve. However, she added that simply dividing funding between the city’s six wards isn’t the best approach, since it won’t necessarily address parks that require more expensive upgrades in one section of the city to match amenities already in place elsewhere. “If everyone gets the same dollar amount, that is equality,” she said. “That is not equity.” Equity, she added, would be ensuring parks of similar sizes have the same basic features throughout the city. Yngve cited the lack of drinking water at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Ward 4, while similar-sized parks in the city have facilities that don t require users to bring their own water. ....
