Improv Theater Opening in Downtown State College


Happy Valley Improv will open a new venue dedicated to improv comedy in downtown State College, the group announced on Monday.
The Blue Brick Theatre will be located at 209 W. Calder Way. The location is the former home of The Makery, which moved nearby to 123 S. Fraser St. in April.
“We’re thrilled to take this next step in building our community and small business,” James Tierney, Happy Valley Improv co-founder and business manager, said in a statement. “We can’t wait to see what cool comedy events we can do with our growing community at the theatre.”
Billed as State College’s premier improv company, Happy Valley Improv will host regular improv comedy shows as well as comedy open mic nights, comedy classes and workshops at the venue. ....

Small business assistance grant open to Centre County businesses | News, Sports, Jobs

BELLEFONTE Small businesses with five or less employees, including owners, impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, in Centre County may be eligible to receive up to $5,000 to assist in economic recovery.
The Small Business Assistance Grant Program is being offered in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to support hard-hit businesses and is funded with a $43,300 entitlement Community Development Block Grant-CARES Act (CDBG-CV).
Eligible businesses must be located within the physical boundaries of Centre County, excluding State College and Bellefonte Borough, and be able to document negative impacts of the COVID-19 mitigation efforts.
The grants can be used to pay utility payments, rent/mortgage payments, payroll, inventory and supplies, and marketing/advertising costs as relief for the negative impacts COVID-19 has had on the business. Applicants are required to declare all other programs and awards they have received in response to the coronavirus to ensure ....

Giant Confirms Plans to Build Store in New Benner Pike Shopping Center


Giant Food Stores on Friday confirmed the company plans to build a new supermarket on Benner Pike near Bellefonte.
The 50,000-square-foot store will be located in a new shopping center planned for a 15-acre tract along Benner Pike and Paradise Road in Benner Township.
According to a news release, construction is scheduled to begin in 2022, pending township approvals, with opening expected in 2023.
It will be the third Giant store in Centre County. The location at 2121 S. Atherton St. in College Township opened in June 2019 after relocating from the Nittany Commons Shopping Center. The Giant in Northland Center along North Atherton Street in Ferguson Township opened in 1989. ....

Shopping Center with Supermarket, Restaurants Planned for Benner Pike


A proposed shopping center would bring a new supermarket and restaurants to Benner Pike near Bellefonte.
Preliminary land development plans for the 15-acre parcel along Benner Pike and Paradise Road in Benner Township were reviewed during Tuesday’s Centre County Board of Commissioners meeting.
The plans, prepared by PennTerra Engineering, include a 53,570-square-foot supermarket with a fuel area, two fast food restaurants of 4,300 and 3,600 square feet, a 2,200-square-foot coffee/fast food restaurant and a 7,200- square-foot medical/office building.
Christopher Schnure, county subdivision and land development planner, said the developers have not specifically said what commercial entities will occupy the buildings. ....

STATE COLLEGE The Chamber of Business and Industry and the Centre County Industrial Development Corp. announced that longtime president and CEO Vern Squier will retire late this year.
The timing of his departure is dependent on search outcomes. Squier will play a key role ensuring a smooth transition. A national search for his replacement is underway.
Squier joined the Chamber of Business and Industry in Centre County in 2011, and worked to increase the organization’s capacity to serve chamber members, CCIDC projects/programming, and worked collaboratively with other key leaders and groups to position the broader community and region for success into the future. ....
