Jacobs to lead on Highways England's controversial historic railway contract

Jacobs has been reappointed as the sole provider for Highways England’s Historical Railways Estate (HRE) contract for a further seven years.
The contract award will see Jacobs oversee the maintenance and disposal of over 3,000 assets that make up the estate, including 77 listed structures across the UK.
Highways England estimates the contract value to be £30M over the seven year period, with the option to extend to 10 years.
Jacobs role includes design, site supervision, bridge and scour assessments, abnormal load checking and stakeholder management, as well as environmental, ecological and estate management services across HRE assets, which include viaducts, bridges, tunnels and culverts. ....

Concerned MPs urge Highways England to revisit plan to demolish hundreds of historic rail assets
The House of Commons Transport Committee – made up of cross-party MPs – has urged Highways England’s new chief executive to re-evaluate plans to demolish and infill hundreds of historic railway bridges and tunnels.
The structures are part of the Historical Railways Estate managed by Highways England on behalf of the DfT and comprises 3,800 bridges, tunnels and viaducts, including 77 listed structures.
In a letter to Highways England acting chief executive Nick Harris and DfT transport minister Baroness Charlotte Vere, Transport Committee chair Huw Merriman revealed that the group of MPs is “concerned to hear about Highways England’s plans to infill or demolish parts of the estate”. ....

The historic railway lines closed by Richard Beeching are at risk of being demolished, campaigners have warned, preventing them from ever being resurrected.
Highways England plans to infill or destroy over 100 bridges and disused train structures in the next five years on the grounds of health and safety.
However, a new campaign group, the Historical Railways Estate (HRE) Group, has called for the structures to be saved, in order to protect relics of Britain s rail history and allow for the lines to one day be reused. ....
