Detroit drinking water has returned, 7 months after Oregon wildfires

Detroit is a city defined by water.
Water from the North Santiam River, surrounding streams and Detroit Lake have been key to the city’s development and economy.
But for 7 1/2 months following the wildfires, Detroit was without drinking water.
Over the past few years, Detroit had focused on replacing the city’s water distribution system, some of which was part of the original town and moved with the city in 1952.
It was so plagued with problems, including leaks, that the city was losing more than a million gallons of treated water each month.
Between 2019 and the summer of 2020, the distribution pipes were replaced in a $3.2 million project funded by a grant from Business Oregon and raising water rates to $60 from $45 per month for customers. ....

Detroit Lake campgrounds reopen after wildfires, six stay closed

The Detroit area is taking another small step toward normalcy this month with the reopening of six campgrounds around the popular reservoir east of Salem that burned in last September s Labor Day fires.
The largest campground in the area, Detroit Lake State Park, reopened last month. The Forest Service has added to the overnight options by gradually reopening its collection of smaller sites around the lake and on the upper North Santiam River including:
Santiam Flats Campground, on the southeast side of Detroit Lake, open now
Cove Creek Campground, on the south side of Detroit Lake, open now ....

John Pearson, deeply loved son of Becky and Jay Pearson of McMinnville, Oregon, and beloved brother of Zak Pearson of Chicago, was born March 27, 1987, in McMinnville, and passed away unexpectedly April 19, 2021, at home in McMinnville.
Growing up in McMinnville, John enjoyed family camping trips to national and state parks, skiing, river rafting and fishing lakes and streams. Marion Lake above the North Santiam River Gorge and the lakes and streams along the Cascade Lakes Highway near Bend were particular favorites of his. John was always in search of the unexplored and spent much of his time seeking out new adventures along the less traveled trails in Washington, Oregon and the wilderness throughout the Southwest. ....

Officials: Dam in Oregon could fail in a large earthquake

SALEM, Ore.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has determined that a large earthquake which is expected to occur again in the Pacific Northwest sooner or later could cause the spillway gates of a dam in Oregon to buckle, resulting “in a potentially catastrophic flood.”
The Corps said late Monday that it would try to minimize the danger by reducing the maximum height of the lake by five feet starting in April. Hundreds of thousands of people, including those in Salem, Oregon’s capital, live downstream from the Detroit Dam, whose construction in the 1950s created the narrow, nine-mile-long Detroit Lake. ....
