Tweed Shire Council A tender has been awarded for the Tweed leg of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail. The next step in the Tweed leg of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail will move forward after Councillors voted overnight to award an $11.8 million contract to one of 4 preferred tenderers. Councillors agreed to support the recommendation of Council officers to award the contract to a complying tender bid from Hazell Bros (Qld) Pty Ltd following a rigorous tendering process. The decision was made in a confidential hearing following legal advice that was sought after a threat of legal action by a third party group. Opponents had called for the rail trail to be built off-formation – or alongside the existing track infrastructure. ....

Ballina Shire Council is backing the HuskeeSwap program with free coffees at different cafes in Lennox this week, for coffeeholics keen to try a new solution to a growing problem. But the new not-for-profit company hosting the rally, Northern Rivers Rail Ltd, also wants a walking path built alongside the rail line. Their idea is to gain a large number of members from our region and beyond , who will make donations to help pay for new recycled plastic walking paths. Secretary Lydia Kindred said the plastic pathways were environmentally sound . This in itself prevents thousands of tons of plastic from going into landfill, she said. They are Australian made, in Victoria and South Australia, and can be built over low lying parts of the track and will be more enjoyable to ride on for cyclists and more comfortable to walk on than bitumen or concrete. ....
Some will be overjoyed and others will see red as Tweed Council announces today that vegetation clearing along the Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek rail corridor is due to start next Monday (11 January 2021). Council says the final funds needed to design and build the Tweed section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail have been secured. NSW Treasury signed a deed providing $7.8 million towards the Tweed section of the rail trail on 17 December 2020, returning it to Tweed Shire Council just before Christmas. With the Australian Government executing a funding deed for $6.5 million in 2018 under its Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Package Fund, Council now has $14.3 million to complete the Tweed section of the rail trail. It also has secured a further $600,000 from the NSW Government to cover the cost of promoting, operating and embellishing the Tweed section for the first three years. ....
