Green light for Tweed leg of Northern Rivers Rail Trail

A tender has been awarded for the Tweed leg of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail.
The next step in the Tweed leg of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail will move forward after Councillors voted overnight to award an $11.8 million contract to one of 4 preferred tenderers.
Councillors agreed to support the recommendation of Council officers to award the contract to a complying tender bid from Hazell Bros (Qld) Pty Ltd following a rigorous tendering process.
The decision was made in a confidential hearing following legal advice that was sought after a threat of legal action by a third party group. Opponents had called for the rail trail to be built off-formation – or alongside the existing track infrastructure. ....

Highway traffic delays after truck rollover north of Byron – The Echo


There have been two highway crashes north of Byron this morning.
Northbound traffic was reduced to one lane shortly before 8.30am after two cars crashed near Chinderah Bay Drive.
Police were on-scene but the incident was declared over by 8.50am.
Meanwhile a clean-up was still happening at Crabbes Creek near Hulls Road after a truck rolled over shorty after 5am.
A Transport Management Centre spokesman said the driver got out of the truck alive but Northbound traffic was reduced to one lane and was expected to stay that way for until shortly before 10am.
The spokesman said the Pantech truck had been carrying furniture and other items and there was debris on the road. ....

Our low numbers of COVID-19 are due only to our island nation’s ability to isolate, which comes with the economic and social cost of locked borders (“Australia needs to set out its COVID-19 endgame”, April 17-18). This must end at some stage but only when our healthcare system can handle the influx of COVID-19 cases, including unknown new variants, with the best vaccination program available at that time. As we can already see, this will vary with updated scientific data and improved vaccines, and should be managed by medical regulatory bodies based on that information, not by politics and emotive overreaction. There is no zero-risk option with this disease or with its management, but let’s go with the best scientific evidence ....
