Blue Hill selectmen seek to grow their numbers BLUE HILL Since the 1700s, the town of Blue Hill has been governed by a three-member Board of Selectmen, according to Selectman Jim Dow. But times have changed and the board, which is currently at two members due to former Selectman Vaughn Leach’s resignation, would like to add more members. The selectmen held a public hearing Monday to discuss the annual Town Meeting warrant, which will be held by referendum due to the COVID-19 pandemic and accompanying social distancing requirements that Governor Janet Mills still has in place. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Blue Hill Consolidated School gymnasium. ....
How Maine towns are run TRENTON We are approaching town meeting season, when many municipalities statewide will gather for the annual event (sometimes spread over multiple meetings) to elect town officials, vote on ordinances, levy taxes and approve the yearly budget. In preparation, here’s a quick refresher on how local government operates. The most commonly used form of government in the state is the town meeting/board of selectmen structure. According to the Maine Municipal Association, a member-based, nonpartisan organization that provides professional services to municipalities, there are 209 Maine municipalities that operate this way. In these towns, residents meet annually and act as the legislative arm of the government by passing ordinances, approving a budget, levying taxes and electing town officers, including selectmen. ....
Busy Blue Hill selectman resigns BLUE HILL Selectman Vaughn Leach, citing overwhelming demands from his roll-off container business due to the pandemic, has resigned from his seat on the board. But also, he and his wife, Melanie, have moved to a rental house in the town of Surry while they build a new house on land they own in Blue Hill. As a selectman, you need to be a resident of the town you’re serving, not just a property owner, Leach explained. The native son’s current term was due to expire in April. He has been a selectman since 2013. ....
Blue Hill to present solar farm moratorium to voters BLUE HILL The town of Blue Hill intends to present voters with a solar farm moratorium at a special town meeting on a date yet to be determined, according to town officials. Blue Hill has received one application from Borrego Solar, doing business as Blue Hill Solar, which proposes a solar farm on the York Road in East Blue Hill, said Code Enforcement Officer Judy Jenkins. The Planning Board Nov. 9 found the application incomplete. Jenkins said the selectmen have reviewed a first draft of the proposed solar moratorium and are awaiting revisions.
