Hundreds of donations collected for migrant children housed in Michigan during border surge

Michigan residents donated hundreds of toys, clothes and other items to unaccompanied migrant children being housed in the state under a federal program.
A donation drive organized by state Rep. Mari Manoogian, D-Birmingham, and Fems for Democracy, a nonprofit political advocacy group, resulted in an outpouring of generosity from residents across the state. Volunteers said they’re trying to make life a little more comfortable for children who traveled thousands of miles without their parents.
“These are unaccompanied children sent here to find a better life,” said Gina Keller, a board member with Fems for Democracy. “I would just hope that if I was in their shoes, somebody on the receiving end would show kindness and support to my children. When someone says, “Do I look dead to you?” the answer is usually no, but a 94-year-old in Long Island has still had trouble convincing the county tax assessor’s office that she’s telling the truth.
Ann Mazze didn’t realize she was considered dead by Nassau County until the taxes on her home shot through the roof; for example, her school taxes went from $327 to $4,773 in one year. The new classification also made her monthly mortgage payments go up by $800.
How does this kind of thing happen? Her daughter,
Lori Goldman, says she believes the mistake came after she bought the house from her mother in 2019. When they classified her mother as dead, she lost a senior property tax benefit called Enhanced STAR; she also lost her veteran tax exemption, which she gets due to her late husband’s military service. ....
