Hundreds of donations collected for migrant children housed in Michigan during border surge Updated May 10, 2021; Facebook Share Michigan residents donated hundreds of toys, clothes and other items to unaccompanied migrant children being housed in the state under a federal program. A donation drive organized by state Rep. Mari Manoogian, D-Birmingham, and Fems for Democracy, a nonprofit political advocacy group, resulted in an outpouring of generosity from residents across the state. Volunteers said they’re trying to make life a little more comfortable for children who traveled thousands of miles without their parents. “These are unaccompanied children sent here to find a better life,” said Gina Keller, a board member with Fems for Democracy. “I would just hope that if I was in their shoes, somebody on the receiving end would show kindness and support to my children. These children are caught up in the system through no fault of their own, so we just want to make sure they have everything they need here.”
