Thomas J. Gerrity


Thomas John Gerrity, 61, passed on Dec. 2, 2020 unexpectedly and peacefully with his family by his side. He was born, one of eight children, to Robert Gerrity and Ann Gerrity on May 9, 1969 in San Bernardino.
When he was age 2, his family moved to Rapid City, S.D. By the age of 7, he learned all the skills required to grow up with seven siblings. These skills served him well when his family moved to Sacramento. Life on the playground in Sacramento was slightly different than Rapid City. At age 9, Tom and his brother Jim, age 7, saw a pocketknife at a hardware store. Neither had any money, so Tom pointed out all the work that they could do at the store in payment for the knife. The storeowner let them work. Tom learned quickly that life was better when he had money in his pocket. He started his paper route at age 9. From there, he grew fresh produce and sold it to local restaurants, washed dishes (briefly) at Little Joe’s restaurant in Sacramento. He did body work on cars ....

California legislature's first Muslim chaplain draws heavily from service in South Africa

Imam Muhammad Yasir Khan made history this month after California State Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon selected him to serve as the state legislature’s first-ever Muslim chaplain from 2021 to 2022.
In an exclusive interview with
The National, Mr Khan outlined how he hopes to serve the people of California as the state assembly’s chaplain and explained how his past studies and service in South Africa have informed his work in the United States.
“There is a lot of hope in the Muslim community that this is a good step,” Mr Khan told
