With the COVID pandemic coming under control, lawmakers in the Hudson Valley and other Lyme disease hotspots hope attention, and money, return to tick-borne disease education and research.
It seems ticks were out in greater force in the spring than in recent history.
“The early data from our area in the Hudson Valley suggests that, at least for black-legged ticks, this is a greater than normal year,” says Ostfeld. “An average year is dangerous, and this is even more dangerous in 2021.”
Especially, says Dr. Rick Ostfeld, the nymph-stage tick, which was active in June and poses the greatest risk of disease transmission to people. On a personal note, Ostfeld says he also is seeing many more dog ticks. Republican state Senator Sue Serino also notices a tick surge.

AUGUSTA The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention has announced the winners of its annual Lyme Disease Awareness Month poster contest, held for Maine students in kindergarten through grade 8.
Maine CDC holds the contest every May to demonstrate the importance of tickborne disease prevention and awareness.
This year’s winners are:
• Evelyn Hibbard, grade 1, Suzanne Smith Elementary School, Levant;
• Lulu Willauer, grade 3, Stratton Elementary School;
• Alexia Indermuehle, grade 5, Andover Elementary School; and
• Aiden Zagelder, grade 8, Hichborn Middle School, Howland.

This year’s Lyme Disease Awareness Month theme is “Stop. Check. Prevent.” The campaign promotes personal prevention measures as the best way to keep from getting a tickborne disease. Deer ticks in Maine can carry the viruses, bacteria and protozoan parasites that cause diseases, including Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis and Borrelia miyamotoi disease. These ticks are most commonly found in wooded, leafy and shrubby areas, putting many Mainers at risk every day. Anyone spending time outdoors should take steps to limit their exposure to ticks, which are already active in Maine.
