Comal County departments coming home to downtown


Comal County operations will soon be returning under the same downtown umbrella.
Judge Sherman Krause said renovations of the Courthouse Annex are scheduled to wrap up later this month, and with that comes the return of several county departments that were shuffled into temporary digs the past two years.

“The date for substantial completion of the Annex is July 22 and we will have furniture delivered between Aug. 2 and Aug. 6,” Krause said. “It will take four weeks to install the furniture, and as soon as it is installed we will start the moves.” ....

Comal County Jail deals are helping offset building costs


Comal County Commissioners on Thursday will consider transferring $600,000 to pay for county office renovations, which in part will eventually be funded by boarding inmates from other Texas counties. 
First, SpawGlass Contractors will see $47,418 subtracted from its contingency and the county’s share will increase by $134,003 after commissioners approve the 12th change order for the Annex project, most of which is designated for video communications, security cameras and doors and design changes to accommodate both.
Previous change orders have increased the Annex renovations by $1.131 million, to $12.016 million, with Thursday’s approvals extending the date of substantial completion from July 12 to July 22. Later in the meeting, commissioners will transfer $600,000 in budgeted funds to cover increased spending in all county construction projects.  ....

Comal County nearing end of downtown renovations


Two decades ago, Comal County began planning for the growth everyone knew was coming. 
Then the county’s population was around 78,000, and 10 years later totaled 108,472 — the same year voters rejected a $36 million justice center and additional downtown county office space.
Now that the county has exceeded 150,000 residents, its facilities downtown are nearing the end of a $32.5 million facelift for new offices, three county courts at-law and five district courts. 
“It’s really something to see because it’s something we’ve talked about for so long,” County Judge Sherman Krause said. “We’re finally kind of seeing all of it (come to fruition).” ....
