Bergen International Festival, the largest curated festival for music and performing arts in the Nordic region, launches tomorrow 26 May. This year provides audiences worldwide with digital access to 30 events with highlights including, among many others, 2021 Festival Composer Missy Mazzoli and young violinist Johan Dalene, winner of the 2019 Norwegian Soloist Prize. Mazzoli, a Grammy-nominated composer, made history in 2018 when she became one of the two first women – along with composer Jeanine Tesori – to be commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera. Her works are performed all over the world, including by the Kronos Quartet, Eighth Blackbird, pianist Emanuel Ax, LA Opera, New York City Opera, Los Angeles Philharmonic, American Composers Orchestra, and many others. ....

The Skirball Cultural Center partially reopens this weekend with “Ai Weiwei: Trace,” the artist’s portraits of imprisoned dissidents and free-speech advocates, all crafted with Lego bricks. It’s a smaller version of Ai’s installation for his unprecedented 2014 exhibition on Alcatraz, which Times critic Christopher Knight called “an always-poignant, often-powerful meditation on soul-deadening repressions of human thought and feeling.”

Classical music conductors are hugely influential in determining what music you hear at concerts. They are the single biggest gatekeepers for whether most living composers will have their works performed or not. Conductor Marin Alsop stands firm in her commitment to championing the works of women composers.
I try to program with diversity in mind, always adhering to my principle that I have to believe in the music in order to champion it, she said.
We asked Marin for a list of 10 women composers we should know, but she cautions, “there are at least 50 who I can think of off the top of my head who are worth listening to and deserve to be represented. ....

Anna Meredith is a Scottish composer, producer and performer whose 2019 track moonmoons blew Emma’s mind.
