The Art of Sacrifice: A new book celebrates George Petrou's commemorative art

Many readers will be aware of Melbourne artist and graphic designer, George Petrou OAM and his paintings of individual Anzacs and celebrated Australians. His distinctive paintings which vividly bring to life the individuals from our past now hang in institutions across Australia and overseas.
Now George – in conjunction with Big Sky Publishing – has captured this work in a single, large format volume of over 400 pages, lavishly illustrated. Recently I met up with George in Oakleigh’s Greek precinct to see and talk about this new book.
The book tells George’s personal story – of his commitment to honouring the service of many of Australia’s service personnel, of how this commitment helped him personally through the challenges of chemotherapy and how his work has touched thousands across Australia. Many descendants of the veterans concerned – as well as some veterans themselves – were consulted by George as he created his paintings and ....

La Brae on Bay Street, LA Down Under where the first migrants walked

Bay Street in Port Melbourne, where many Greek businesses are located, was closed to cars at midnight on Monday so the crew of “La Brea”, a new US TV show could begin filming in the area for the next six months.
The word travelled quickly down Bay Street. Sarah Dimitrokallis of Melbourne Bakehouse told
Neos Kosmos the film was discussed by businesses and customers alike. “I feel like a lot of the residents are excited that the street is getting a lot of publicity, but others are annoyed by the road closures and it is hard to get down to the beach.” ....

Greek campaign veterans honoured at Oakleigh's RSL

This year’s annual service was held indoors and in a COVID-19 safe environment.
Greek community members representing organizations from northern Greece, across the Peloponnese and the Aegean laid wreaths in unison in honour of George Foot and all who served in the Greek campaign.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Mr Lee Tarlamis OAM MP said that it was important to remind local communities of the links between Greece and Australia through the Anzac tradition.

“George Foot was a local Oakleigh boy who volunteered in WW2 and served bravely in the Greek campaign, evading capture, escaping from the Germans on the mainland with the help of local villagers in the Mani region of the Peloponnese and was successfully evacuated to Crete by the Royal Navy.” ....

Melbourne's Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial restored - and protectors rewarded

It was reported in
Neos Kosmos that late last year the Memorial had been vandalized. The statue of the Australian nurse had been partially spray-painted by persons unknown.
However quick action by local residents saw the person responsible interrupted and his vandalism stopped. If it wasn’t for their brave action who knows what further damage may have been done.
The Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee was notified by a Melbournian of Lemnian heritage, who had been contacted by the residents who had intervened. The Committee then contacted the Port Phillip Council, who took action to secure the Memorial and commence its restoration. In consultation with the creator of the sculptures – Peter Corlett OAM – the Council has now restored the Memorial. This required significant work and attention by the Council’s skilled staff. Recently members of the Committee accompanied Peter Corlett on a visit to the restored Memorial. ....
