Phoenix men lose Horizon League tournament opener

By Jim Scott Feb 26, 2021 12:43 PM (GREENBAYPHOENIX.COM) – Green Bay’s season came to a heartbreaking end in double overtime on Thursday night at the Kress Center, as the Phoenix fell to No. 10 Purdue Fort Wayne 89-84 in a Horizon League first-round tournament game. PJ Pipes led the Phoenix with 27 points including 8 points in the two overtime periods despite playing with an ankle injury. Both team shot well with the Phoenix beginning an impressive 15-of-27 (56%) from the floor while Purdue Fort Wayne followed closely behind at 14-for-31 (45%). Green Bay led by eight on two separate occasions in the second half. The Mastodons came on strong late and diminished GB’s six-point advantage to one in 43 seconds, making it a one-point game with 8:19 remaining, 55-54.

Green Bay Phoenix men get Will Ryan his first win

By Jim Scott Jan 2, 2021 6:32 PM (GREEN BAY PHOENIX ATHLETICS/WNFL)  YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO – Head coach Will Ryan notched his first win at the helm of the Green Bay men’s basketball program on Saturday at Youngstown State, defeating the Penguins 79-69 behind a career-high 30 points from PJ Pipes. Youngstown State, picked to finish second in the Horizon League’s preseason poll, suffered its first home loss this season. The Phoenix trailed 33-32 at halftime in a game that featured 17 lead changes. Green Bay took the lead for good with 3:33 to play when Lucas Stieber saved a ball headed out of bounds and found an open Pipes who hit a three-pointer. It was his fifth of the game and gave the Phoenix a 66-65 lead.
