Back bills to protect highway workers
This year, Workers’ Memorial Day, a day to remember those who died in the course of doing their jobs, coincides with Work Zone Awareness Week, a week set aside to remind motorists to slow down while traveling in work zones.
Sadly, some motorists can’t be bothered.
Perhaps they are running late and feel they don’t have time to slow down. They might be on their phone and too distracted to notice the signs or maybe they just don’t care.
The result is that too many highway workers are injured or killed in work zones every day. ....

I found the views of Sen. Ron Johnson (R) Wisconsin, on coronavirus vaccinations ill-informed and ignorant.
The senator asks the question, “What do you care if your neighbor has one or not?”
I care, senator, because pods of unvaccinated individuals like those stalwarts in the Fulton County law enforcement community (The Gazette April 10 article “COVID outbreak hits jail”) and in Republican/Trumpist enclaves generally, provide a cozy petri dish for the production of mutants of the virus against which our vaccines might have difficulty protecting us.
In the end, the “You can’t make me” mindset can only prolong our battle against this scourge. ....

British Library could relabel Chaucer's Canterbury Tales to include links to slave trade

For the case of Geoffrey Chaucer s manuscript of The Canterbury Tales, written between 1387 and 1400 - before the Portuguese started the Atlantic slave trade - it will be explained how the book came to be owned by the Harley family of slave-traders around 300 years later.
The family became wealthy through the exploits of Robert Harley (1661 - 1724) who, as Chancellor of the Exchequer, established the South Sea Company in 1711 and was connected to plantations in Barbados, Antigua and Surinam.
The South Sea Company was responsible for the transportation of around 64,000 enslaved Africans between 1715 and 1731 to Spanish plantations in Central and Southern America. ....

Registration open for Time Travelers: Youth history program to return this summer

Registration opened, April 1 for the Historical Society’s Time Travelers Youth Program for this summer. Visit shelterislandhistorical.org to register.
This year’s Time Travelers Youth Program comprises four different weeks, featuring a different guest artist each week. Each week is limited to 10 children only. Children (of the appropriate age for the specific activity) may enroll in multiple weeks.
Each week is $200.00 per child.
