Two Leander City Council races will be determined in a June 5 runoff election. Mike Sanders and Esmeralda Traube will be on the ballot for Place 2. Nacole Thompson and Donnie Mahan will compete for the Place 4 seat. Early voting will run May 24-29 and June 1 at the Leander Public Library annex at 1011 S. Bagdad Road, according to the city. The library will also be the sole election day voting location. For Places 2 and 4, no candidate reached a majority of votes May 1, which calls for a runoff election between the two candidates who received the most votes, according to city ordinances. Sanders and Traube received the most votes in the Place 2 race, beating incumbent Annette Sponseller. Sanders received 36.6% of votes May 1, and Traube received 33.94% of votes. Sponseller got 29.46% of votes. ....
Leander Police Investigating Murder of Their Dispatcher The Leander Police Department recently announced the identity of a woman who was killed in a stabbing as their very own police dispatcher. According to a report from the Leander Police Department, Miles Speight, 19, is believed to have stabbed and killed his mother, Rowena Speight, 53, following some sort of dispute. Rowena had been employed with the Leander Police Department as a Telecommunications Officer since 2016. The Leander Police Department posted the following statement on their Facebook page: We are deeply saddened to announce the tragic loss of one of our own, Telecommunications Officer Rowena Speight. Yesterday was one of the hardest days for our department as we investigated an early morning domestic violence incident that resulted in the death of one of our own. English Teachers Fight Texas School District From Banning Books Are we talking about banning books to the point they re burning books? No. It s not that extreme. We re talking about a book club reading list in Leander Independent School District, which basically covers the northern part of Austin, including areas like Round Rock and Goergetown. Students are allowed to pick a book from a list of 15 options that are selected based on their grade level. The thought behind the list is that students will get to choose a book from something that interests them. Unfortunately some parents have started to complain about some of the books that are being offered. ....
Georgetown District Six, or D6, opened in Georgetown on March 5. The place is an elevated neighborhood sports restaurant with a large back patio, arcade games and 21 televisions dedicated to all sports. There are also 40 draft beers and wines as well as craft cocktails. District Six is located at 105 W. Ninth St., Georgetown.
