Solar farms in NSW hit by new downgrades from marginal loss factors

5 March 2021
Solar farms in New South Wales are to bear the brunt of new downgrades to the Australian Energy Market Operator’s marginal loss factor figures in the coming financial year, a result of both increased local generation and more imports from Victoria and Queensland congesting the network.
AEMO’s provisional calculations show solar farms the Riverina region of NSW will be particularly hard hit, with many looking at 6 to 8 points knocked off their MLFs.
Solar generators in central Queensland, meanwhile, look set to enjoy the biggest boosts – in some cases by as much as 6 points – as do solar farms in the troubled north west region of north-western Victoria, though from a  lower base. ....

"Tidal wave" of new wind and solar will force early coal plant closures

24 February 2021
Many of Australia’s coal-fired generators are facing unplanned and early retirements as revenues fall to unsustainable levels, according to a new analysis that finds a surge in wind and solar investment is pushing coal out of the electricity market.
The findings have been detailed in a joint analysis completed by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and Green Energy Markets, which found that revenues for coal-fired generators could fall by as much as two-thirds by 2025.
The analysis found that the amount of new wind and solar investment entering the Australian energy market could exceed many recent projections, and a lack of flexibility on the part of ageing coal generators could see them retired sooner than anticipated. ....

CEP. Energy, a specialist renewable energy fund company in Australia, has just announced the largest proposed grid-scale battery project in the world so far, with up to 1,200MW rated output.
Aimed at helping to integrate growing shares of renewable energy on the grid and in turn accelerate the phasing out of fossil fuels, the project will be sited in the small town of Kurri Kurri in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, about 150km north of Sydney on Australia’s east coast. The town lies within the Hunter Economic Zone, an industrial redevelopment scheme. ....

With the growing role of renewable energy in our national power grid, this year will see the roll-out of massive industrial-scale batteries across the country.
Some will be among the world s largest, and, as well as storing renewable energy, they could play an important role in stabilising the grid to prevent blackouts.

Government 'concerned' as energy deadline approaches

Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the government is increasingly concerned that the private sector will call its bluff on the construction of a new gas plant.

Last September Prime Minister Scott Morrison said if the private sector does not build a gas plant in the Hunter Valley to replace the Liddell Power Station, his government would intervene and build one.

Mr Morrison gave the energy companies until the end of March.

Mr Clennell said the government is now pressuring the New South Wales state government to help underwrite such a plant.

“And encouraging both AGL and Energy Australia to seek a state government underwriting of new plants,” Mr Clennell said.

“In a conversation between the federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor and the New South Wales Energy Minister Matt Kean, Taylor is said to have said words to the effect of ‘well you underwrite renewables, why not underwrite gas?’

“The federal government keen to push t ....
