The end of coal-fired generation in Australia is inevitable.
Zero marginal cost, zero emissions energy is now a reality. Wind and solar are cheaper sources of new electricity than coal in most cases, putting significant pressure on the profitability of the inflexible, ageing coal generators.
The only questions are when coal-fired power stations will close and how well Australia will manage that phasedown.
That’s why we need to talk about the role governments can play to ensure the transition is orderly, maintains energy security, avoids price spikes that have followed past closures, looks after affected workers and communities, and ensures Australia meets its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 to 26-28% below 2005 levels. ....

Australian shares were caught between the duelling forces of rising COVID-19 infections in Sydney s northern beaches outbreak and a rally in commodity prices that lifted the price of Fortescue Metals Group to a record high.

Despite ending the last session of the week lower, it has been a positive week overall for the Aussie share market. Information technology stocks led the gains this week, with the sector gaining almost 6 per cent.
At the closing bell the S&P/ASX 200 index closed 1.2 per cent lower or 81 points down to finish at 6,676. Over the week, the market has gained 33 points or 0.5 per cent.
Futures market
S&P 500 futures are eyeing a dip of 12 points.
The Nasdaq futures are eyeing a fall of 36 points.
And the ASX200 futures are eyeing an 89 point fall on Monday morning.
