It’s been a difficult week for transgender people in Arkansas, and Lisa Stuart is finding it hard to stay hopeful. Last week, the state’s Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson, signed two anti-LGBTQ+ bills within 48 hours of each other: a proposal banning trans girls from playing women’s sports in school and another allowing doctors to turn away LGBTQ+ patients. The Arkansas legislature followed up the enactment of those laws on Monday by passing House Bill 1570, a bill that criminalizes gender-affirming care for transgender youth. It’s now one signature away from being the first law ever of its kind. ....
The Dish: Jersey Mike’s Subs in Riverside helps make wishes come true By Susie Costaregni Scene… The staff of the Jersey Mike’s Subs in Riverside and employees of PepsiCo raised over $25,000 for Make-A-Wish Connecticut by holding a “Day of Giving” event last Wednesday. On that day, 100 percent of all sales went to charity at sub shops nationwide. It was all part of the shop’s “Month of Giving” event. Brian O’Hagan, owner of Jersey Mike’s in Riverside, and Carl Kazmierczak, VP of PepsiCo sales, were on hand to make the local check presentation. The nonprofit Make-A-Wish Foundation helps fulfill the wishes of children with critical illnesses. ....
