It’s been a difficult week for transgender people in Arkansas, and Lisa Stuart is finding it hard to stay hopeful. Last week, the state’s Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson, signed two anti-LGBTQ+ bills within 48 hours of each other: a proposal banning trans girls from playing women’s sports in school and another allowing doctors to turn away LGBTQ+ patients. The Arkansas legislature followed up the enactment of those laws on Monday by passing House Bill 1570, a bill that criminalizes gender-affirming care for transgender youth. It’s now one signature away from being the first law ever of its kind.
