A Frederick County sheriff s deputy will head to Russia in January to represent law enforcement in the Special Olympics World Winter Games. I started right out of the gate being involved with Special Olympics. It s near and dear to my heart. I have a sister with Down syndrome, Deputy Amber Owens said.Owens is gearing up for a trip of a lifetime in which she will represent the law enforcement community at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Russia. She s just a great example of how our law enforcement community embraces our athletes, Special Olympics Maryland President and CEO Jim Schmutz said.Owens will run the final leg of the torch run. She was nominated for the honor based on her commitment to Special Olympics athletes. It has been a personal mission after witnessing her younger sister being bullied as a child.
