Center for Sustainable Health Care Quality and Equity Expands DRIVE Toolkit to Address COVID-19 Health Disparities

WASHINGTON, May 24, 2021 /PRNewswire/  The Center for Sustainable Health Care Quality and Equity (SHC), a division of the National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF), today announced the expansion of its Demonstrating Real Improvement in Value and Equity (DRIVE) program to address racial and ethnic disparities surrounding COVID-19 among diverse and underserved communities. The COVID-19 DRIVE toolkit is intended to help primary care teams, health care systems, and community organizations improve health outcomes and vaccination rates as well as enhance quality performance.  
The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted communities of color due to embedded systemic factors. Black Americans are nearly twice as likely to die of COVID-19 and Latinos are three times as likely to be hospitalized, said Dr. Gary A. Puckrein, Ph.D., president and CEO of NMQF. <i>The Lancet Healthy Longevity</i>: Study finds racial and ethnic disparities in flu vaccine uptake among people aged 65 and older in the USA

Study based on 26.5 million Medicare records finds significant racial and ethnic disparities in uptake of seasonal flu vaccine in people living in the USA aged 65 years and older during the 2015-2016 flu season.
Inequities persist among those who were vaccinated, with racial and ethnic minority groups 26-32% less likely to receive the High Dose Vaccine, which is more effective in older people, compared with white older adults.
Authors note that while these results are from the 2015-2016 flu season, the findings point to systemic failings that may hamper efforts to vaccinate against COVID-19, which disproportionately affects minority populations. ....
