One can sympathise with Human Rights Commissioner Paul Hunt and the lose/lose situation he has just found himself in. If he had stayed safe and snug in the Beltway around Parliament, he would have been stereotyped as a liberal snowflake out of touch with the real world. Yet if he had engaged with the Mongrel Mob on their premises and pointedly refused to pay koha, Hunt would have been derided as the human rights guy who neither understood nor respected indigenous rights and protocol. In the end, Hunt seems to have decided that if he was going to try and engage constructively with the Mob on their turf, he shouldn’t simultaneously set out to snub the culture to which they belong. Illinois State Police say 18-year-old Fairfield resident Alexis Sargent was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Clay City Friday afternoon. Preliminary investigative details indicate she was northbound on South Main Street at U.S. 50 when she failed to stop at a stop sign. She was then struck by an eastbound car, driven by 53-year-old Olney resident William Goluba. Goluba and a passenger in Sargent’s car, a 14-year-old male from Fairfield, were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Sargent was also taken to an area hospital, where she passed away.
The Greater Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce has announced Zurliene Enterprises as the 2021 Business of the Year. A three-generation family-owned-and-operated business in the farming sector, Zurliene Enterprises has served Wayne and surrounding counties for over 50 years. They will be honored at the annual Chamber Dinner, and more information on the dinner date will be announced in the future. ....

East Clinton FFA wraps up banner year with annual banquet

The East Clinton FFA Chapter held its annual banquet Tuesday celebrating a busy and successful year.
Last year, the chapter was forced to hold its banquet online, but this year, the chapter is pleased to say that it was able to hold the banquet in person with over 275 guests.
The chapter also streamed the banquet live to Facebook for any who were unable to attend.
The banquet began with an officer slideshow and the introduction of the chapter’s 2020-2021 officer team: President Carter Carey, Vice President Maggie Mathews, Secretary Marci Ellis, Treasurer Katie Carey, Reporter Carah Anteck, Sentinel Lydia Kessler, Student Advisor Lanie Clark, Vice President Chairs Mitchell Bean and Brody Fisher, Assistant Secretary Zach Vest, and Web Tech Jenna Stanley. ....

On Stage: Leesburg, Eustis theater groups wrap up 2020 with a laugh

Live shows are wrapping up for the holidays and the year this week with two comedies, “Rumors” by the Melon Patch Players in Leesburg, and “Making God Laugh,” a holiday-themed production at the Living Drama Theatre in Eustis.
Also performing this week are the Bay Street Players Young People’s Theatre with two virtual Zoom performances of “Little Women” today and Friday and live performances of Festive Holiday Melodies: A YPT Holiday Cabaret Saturday and Sunday.
Look ahead to January with three productions to start off the new year. ....
